A vehicle that reportedly moved on its own while parked at a mall’s parking lot in Imus, Cavite, caught the attention of Filipinos online.
The Facebook page “Parkeserye” shared photos on Tuesday, September 2, showing a car spotted at Ayala Malls Vermosa, which they claimed moved while parked.
“I think the driver forgets [forgot] to handbrake. The car moves,” it said.
“The guard puts kalso and cone,” the page added with laughing emojis.
“Kalso” refers to a wedge or block placed against a vehicle’s wheel.
The photos showed that half of the vehicle was already outside its designated parking slot.
Some Filipinos shared their theories on why the vehicle might have moved on its own, despite being parked.
“So it’s in neutral?!” a Facebook user commented, referring to the “neutral gear” in cars, when no gears are engaged.
“Muscle memory naman ang mag-handbrake,” another wrote.
A handbrake, also called a parking brake, is a mechanism that keeps a vehicle from moving when parked. It also acts as a backup in case the primary brakes fail.
It is usually engaged when parking to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
“Manual transmission [siguro] ‘yan kasi kung [automatic] ‘yan, kapag nalagay na sa ‘park,’ hindi na uusad ‘yan,” another commented, referring to the “parking gear” in automatic cars.
Putting the car in “park” mode prevents it from moving.
Manual cars, however, do not have this gear. Instead, the driver needs to shift the vehicle into “neutral” and then engage the handbrake to keep it from rolling.
