Huawei might be preparing to shake up the foldables market once again. They were the first one to launch the world’s first commercial tri-fold phone and looks like they are ready with an upgrade. According to tipster Digital Chat Station, Huawei is all geared up to release the successor to the Mate XT in the second half of this year. The external design might remain similar, sticking to the Z-style folding structure we saw in the original Mate XT. But under the hood, it could see some real upgrades, with better performance and improved cameras. This tri-fold was a revolutionary device that launched last September. It offered a dual-fold mechanism that turned a compact phone into a tablet-sized display. Huawei is now going all in on this form factor and is ready to disrupt the foldables market. Some early rumours have also given a hint about the internals of their new tri-fold device. The new Mate tri-fold could be powered by a next-gen Kirin chipset. While the exact name isn’t confirmed, it could be the Kirin 9020, an upgrade over the Kirin 9010 found in the current Mate XT. It’s reportedly built on a new N-1 node, which might allow for better power efficiency and performance. If true, this would mark a continued push by Huawei to build high-performing devices without relying on Mediatek or Qualcomm.
On the camera side, the new Mate XT is expected to get significant imaging upgrades. The details and specifications are still under wraps, but Huawei is focusing heavily on the camera system and peripheral components for this launch. This likely means better sensors, improved image processing, and maybe even some AI-driven photography features powered by the new Kirin chip

Huawei’s Mate XT was more than just another foldable. It was the first tri-fold design to hit the market, giving users the power to carry a tablet in their pocket. With HarmonyOS, this foldable was also optimised on the software side and could be used in different modes. While everyone’s playing in the clamshell or book-style folding design, Huawei is taking things up a notch and innovating in this segment.
