SILANG, Cavite – Incumbent Mayor Ted Carranza yesterday was sworn in as mayor of the richest town in the province of Cavite.
Associate Justice Luis Acosta of the Court of Appeals (CA) officiated Carranza’s oath of office after the latter was proclaimed as the winning candidate in the May 12, 2025 local polls.
Residents of the upland town have expressed confusion on who really will be their mayor come June 30, 2025 after both Carranza and former Mayor Kevin Anarna of the National Unity Party (NUP) took their oath of office.
Anarna, who claimed he was the winner in the recent elections in the town, was immediately sworn in a few days after the midterm and local polls.
Last Wednesday, the Board of Canvassers in Silang led by local Commission on Elections (Comelec) head Aries Cortez proclaimed Carranza as the duly elected mayor of the town by virtue of the cancellation of votes garnered by Anarna.
Anarna garnered 54,787 votes while Carranza of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) came in second with 40,447 votes.
According to Silang Public Information Office (PIO), there is no second placer in the local polls in the town as Carranza placed frontrunner in the mayoral race.
The Silang PIO said the votes Anarna got were stray votes, saying they were acknowledged due to the cases filed against the former mayor.
Anarna’s camp expressed hope that the Supreme Court will side with them on June 30 on who really deserves to be the mayor of the historic town of Silang.
Earlier, the poll body en banc granted a motion for reconsideration (MR) filed by Carranza, which seeks to reverse a ruling of the Comelec First Division, dismissing the petition for disqualification he lodged against Anarna.
Carranza filed the disqualification petition on the grounds of a October 2024 decision of the Ombudsman, dismissing Anarna from public office for grave misconduct and serious dishonesty. It also perpetually disqualified Anarna from holding public office.
