The Sangguniang Kabataan of a barangay in Amadeo, Cavite, has thought of a way to reduce garbage in their area: by trading a kilo of rice for a kilo of plastic.
A report by GMA News’ Rida Reyes on News To Go on Monday said residents of Barangay Talon welcomed the initiative.
Aling Lita’s family consumes three kilos of rice every week. Through the initiative, Aling Lita said she was able to save money.
The collected plastic will be shredded and placed inside plastic bottles that can be used as “eco-bricks.”
Local official said that the town’s garbage mostly come from Cavite and Laguna.
Almost 60 percent of the garbage collected from their town were plastic and non-biodegradable materials. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
