The Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development visited coastal areas in Cavite hit by the MT Terranova oil spill to understand the current situation of the affected communities last August 2. The province, still reeling from the effects of super typhoon Carina, is also facing a state of calamity due to the oil spill.
Fisherfolk communities report that fishing is currently prohibited, with fines imposed on those caught violating the ban.
“Wala naman kaming ibang inaasahan kundi sa dagat lang. Hindi rin kami makapalaot, ‘pag lumaot naman kami, huhulihin. Pag nahuli, magpipiyansa ka pa, magmumulta. Paano naman kami?” said Rodelio Himaya, 59, fisherfolk from Barangay Bancaan, Naic, Cavite.
