The Japanese government is shifting focus toward applicants with stronger financial backing, proven management expertise, and deeper integration into Japanese society through language and local employment. Employers should take note of the new requirements, specifically if they are seeking to sponsor a foreign national on Business Manager status in Japan.
The Immigration Services Agency of Japan has revised the approval criteria for the Business Manager residence status, with the new standards taking effect from October 16, 2025. Under the revised requirements, applicants must have capital of at least 30 million yen and either a) more than three years of management experience or b) a master’s degree (or higher) in a field related to business management or accounting. Additionally, they must employ at least one full-time staff member, and either the applicant or the full-time employee must possess proficiency in the Japanese language.
These new requirements apply to individuals who apply for the residence status on or after October 16. Those who obtained the residence status before the revision will be granted a grace period and will be required to meet the new requirements within three years of the implementation date. At the time of status renewal, stricter examinations will be conducted, including checks on tax payment status and social insurance contributions.
