The Commission on Elections (Comelec) Task Force SAFE on Monday filed a motu proprio disqualification petition against Silang, Cavite mayoralty candidate Alston Kevin Anarna, over his controversial remarks directed at solo parents.
The Task Force SAFE, or Safeguarding Against Fear and Exclusion in Election, lodged the disqualification against Anarna after he allegedly violated the poll body’s anti-discrimination resolution for Eleksyon 2025.
The disqualification charges stemmed from a show-cause order (SCO) the Comelec issued against the mayoralty bet over the statements he made during a campaign activity in March.
(Who are the solo parents here? Why does it seem like there are more of you? We’ll give every solo parent a free spouse. We’ll raffle off the widows and widowers—let’s just see who ends up with whom. Once your name is drawn, you’ll be married off by Mayor Kevin.)
The Comelec earlier stated that the remarks may be considered gender-based harassment under Comelec Resolution 11116, which enforces the Anti-Discrimination and Fair Campaigning Guidelines in relation to Republic Act 11313 or the Safe Spaces Act. Anarna has since apologized for his remarks.
