AZLIE Guro looks to join the growing list of sportsmen in public service.
After bringing Emilio Aguinaldo College to contention in the high school division as head coach a few years ago, Guro is running for councilor of Dasmariñas City in the coming local elections.
The 44-year-old Guro once led the EAC-ICA (Immaculate Concepcion Academy) Brigadiers to the NCAA Season 89 juniors Final Four, while also bringing the EAC Cavite Vanguards college team to a second runner-up finish in the NCAA South Season 25. He taught Media Studies and Mass Communications in the school, as well.
Guro also claimed a title for the Dasmarinas Monarchs in the 2019 Southern Tagalog Calabarzon Athletic Association (STCAA), and eventually led the region to a second runner-up finish in the Palarong Pambansa in the same year.
Among the players that he coached were now-PBA player Sidney Onwubere, alongside Will McAloney, John Cantimbuhan, and Shaq Alanes.
Guro later became the Sports Development Head of Dasmariñas City, and was tasked to lead the Citizens’ Action Team and the Complaints and Action Unit that addressed public concerns.
The onetime EAC shot-caller is confident that his vast experience in coaching, as well as his involvement in the community being also a member of the Knights of Columbus will be helpful if he is fortunate enough to win in the local elections.
“I will advocate for education, sports development, peace and order, family welfare, and leadership development,” said Guro, whose insights on leadership was also featured on Winning Still, a book published during the pandemic.
“Guided by authentic leadership, athletic excellence, and a profound commitment to community, I’m dedicated to bring these advocacies to life for the benefit of every Dasmarineño,” said Guro, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, a Masters in Public Administration, and Public Safety Administration, and a Doctorate in Humanities.
