Residents in several parts of Luzon have evacuated to safer grounds to escape the wrath of Super Typhoon Uwan as it made landfall over Aurora province, according to reports in “24 Oras Weekend” on Sunday.
In Nico Waje’s report, residents of Purok 7 in Barangay Santol in Tanza, Cavite flee for safety.
One of them is the Agorilla family who prioritized evacuation of their grandmother who is a wheelchair user.
“The weather is not safe for everyone. So I don’t want to put my grandmother’s life at risk,” said Maria Gemma Agorilla.
Meanwhile, some residents have already prepared their belongings but have yet to evacuate.
“We will just evacuate once the rain gets heavy,” another resident said, noting that water from the nearby river does not enter their house.
Around 50 residents are currently seeking temporary shelter at Santol Elementary School.
Quezon City
Meanwhile, residents of Barangay Old Capitol Site in Quezon City also evacuated as their homes are near a creek, according to Dano Tincungco’s report.
The family of Judy Virtuso have been staying in one of the tents in a nearby basketball court since Saturday. She said that they were traumatized after water that spilled from the creek entered their house last October.
“We developed a phobia whenever rain comes…Especially my husband, who is a stroke patient, was traumatized,” said Virtuso.
Just like in other areas, some residents have yet to stay in the evacuation centers. The barangay called out those who are reserving their tents even without staying there.
“That’s not fair. The tents must be prioritized to those who are really in need…So we will make sure later that everyone is staying in those tents,” said Kagawad Antonio Mariano.
Ilocos Sur
Meanwhile, residents in Ilocos Sur grabbed the chance to evacuate even before the weather worsens.
In Raffy Tima’s report, “Dexter” had his wife and children go to the evacuation center first as he had to secure their house from flying because of the strong winds.
Baguio City
On the other hand, residents in Baguio City are worried about possible landslides because of the super typhoon.
In Jonathan Andal’s report, Zenaida Gallardo is preparing to evacuate as her house, which is just behind the famed Diplomat Hotel, is also beside a cliff.
“Once the rains become non-stop, the soil will definitely soften. This spot will definitely collapse,” she said.
For his part, Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said that the construction of socialized housing for those living in such areas is still ongoing.
“The construction of the houses are still ongoing. Hence, the homes are not yet available. It will still take us two years to finish the construction of the socialized housing,” he said.
