MANILA, Philippines — An employee of the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) was killed in an apparent road rage incident in Dasmariñas, Cavite on Wednesday morning.
Reports said Mayo Jonel Santos, 54, was driving a company vehicle when he pulled over beside a red car along Jose Abad Santos Avenue.
Video footage of closed-circuit television cameras installed in the area showed the drivers of both vehicles opening their windows and pointing fingers at each other.
Santos was seen leaning sideways when the driver of the red car shot him in the head. He was declared dead on arrival in a nearby hospital.
Meralco spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga told News5 that Santos, assigned at the company’s technical support office in Dasmariñas, was about to retire this week.
The company condemned the incident and vowed to seek justice for Santos, who served the company for 21 years.
“In Meralco, we take care of our own,” Zaldarriaga said. “We will make sure that justice is served and we won’t stop until this case is resolved.”
He said Meralco would shoulder Santos’ funeral expenses and provide financial assistance to his family.
Santos was a former president of the Association of Meralco Engineering Technicians.
