MANILA, Philippines — Two cities in Cebu and two areas in Cavite suspended classes yesterday due to flooding and inclement weather.
In separate advisories, Cebu City said it suspended classes in several barangays that experienced flooding.
“Due to the continuous rains causing flooding in several areas of Cebu City, there will be no face-to-face classes in all levels, both public and private schools. Classes will be conducted asynchronously until further notice,” the city’s public information office said.
“Everyone is advised to stay safe and continue learning through online and self-paced platforms,” the office added.
Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony Gullas Jr. also gave a similar directive, canceling face-to-face classes for elementary and high school students and ordering a shift to blended learning.
“This decision is to ensure the safety of our children at home while we continue to assess the situation in our barangays,” Gullas said.
Both Imus City and Kawit town in Cavite also announced the suspension of classes.
Imus Mayor Alex Advincula posted on social media that classes would be suspended in all levels of public and private schools “because of the continuing rains and rise of floodwaters in some parts of the city.”
Advincula said they are leaving it to the Department of Education to decide whether to implement asynchronous classes or modular learning in public schools.
He advised residents to remain at home, stay vigilant and protect themselves from the dangers posed by flooding.
Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Huaning maintained its strength while moving slowly northward, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.
PAGASA said Huaning is unlikely to directly affect the country.
As of 4 p.m. yesterday, the center of Huaning was spotted 555 kilometers east-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.
Huaning was packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 70 kph.
