GENERAL TRIAS CITY, Cavite – Mayor Antonio A. Ferrer , also chairperson of the City Council for the Protection of Children (CCPC), targets a 100 percent literacy rate, from its current 95.97 percent, by further strengthening the city’s holistic approach to address various hindrances or issues that may prevent a child from going to school in the coming year.
Falling under its local investment projects, the city plans to increase the PHP97.3-million fund allotted for this year to various ‘help’ programs such as educational assistance, feeding programs, supplementation of medicines and vitamins, school supplies, early children education and establishment of additional day-care centers.
The mayor also committed to continue its Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES), a project of its city Public Employment Service Office (PESO), in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment, to help the city’s poor students pursue education by providing paid internship for 20 days during summer.
Ferrer also eyes to increase the existing educational institutions – 37 public schools, 88 private elementary and high schools, one special education school (SPED), one state university, and three higher education institutions – in the coming year, with the help of concerned line agencies and 6th district Representative Luis A. Ferrer Jr.
“While the city takes care of the purchase of the land, Congressman Ferrer is responsible for the construction part,” the mayor said.
The targets were cited when the mayor delivered his ‘State of the Children Address’ before elementary and high school students at the Activity Area of Robinsons Place here on Monday, as part of the observance of the National Children’s Month (NCM) this November, pursuant to Republic Act 10661 s. 2015, otherwise known as the ‘National Children’s Month Act’.
The city, a four-time “Child Friendly Seal” awardee by having the most number of permanent day-care centers, ended its month-long celebration by updating the children of the city’s accomplishments.
The mayor reported the establishment of Barangay VAWC (violence against women and children) Desks in all its 33 barangays (villages) in line with this year’s celebration, themed “Isulong Tamang Pag-Aaruga Para sa Lahat ng Bata!” and is aimed at establishing an orderly and safe living environment for children.
Ferrer said these VAWC desks are being strictly monitored to ensure that they readily receive and manage violence-related concerns of women and children including the conduct of advocacy campaign to help curb or totally eradicate incidence of such.
The ‘Panatang Makabata’ (pledge for children) is also regularly recited during flag ceremony this month to help inculcate among city officials and workers of each one’s personal obligations to promote, protect, respect and give importance to children’s welfare.
The city also strengthened its local council that oversees children’s protection – the CPPC, whose three-pronged vision is aligned to health, education, as well as producing empowered and God-fearing youth.
The city government also tied up with Unilever Philippines, Kabisig ng Lahi and Department of Education for the launching of community and school-based feeding program for 300 undernourished children.
Various feeding programs were also conducted on proper washing of hands, nutrition and health activities during the Nutrition Month celebration.
As their mayor, he enjoined everyone to take part and continue to work for the welfare of children. (PNA)
